Marko Lehtimaki: New methodologies make HTML5 hybrid app development accessible to everyone

AppGyver’s mission is to provide complete toolsets for novice and seasoned mobile developers alike, to quickly build, test, preview and deploy fully functioning HTML5 mobile apps that are indistinguishable from native counterparts. The company’s recently released Steroids Platform closes the performance gap between native apps and HTML5 hybrids by utilizing native UI components and navigation and animations, together with an HTML5 wrapped application. Prototyper, the first product launched by AppGyver, allows those with limited technical knowledge to build full app prototypes that can be tested and demonstrated without the need for provisioning the apps themselves, or installing third-party installations and the official app store environment.

Rake Narang: How does your technology help mobile app developers?

Marko Lehtimaki: HTML5 hybrid apps have several advantages. They work across multiple platforms, are comprised of reusable code and pull from a rich trove of open source libraries and technologies, not to mention the ready pool of talented web developers that are building them. However, in terms of performance, HTML5 hybrid apps are generally not on a par with fully native apps. Since app performance is crucial to meet today's high standards, it can be a difficult decision whether to develop native or hybrid apps.

AppGyver Steroids resolves this app development dilemma by utilizing native UI components, navigation and animations, together with the HTML5 wrapped application. This enables AppGyver-based apps to achieve native app performance in hybrid apps and offer the best of both worlds - HTML5 hybrid apps with animation and other performance results that are indistinguishable from those of native apps.

About Marko Lehtimaki

Rake Narang: What are common hurdles for multi-device development, debugging, or integration of native SDKs?

Marko Lehtimaki: When targeting multiple platforms, a developer typically needs to know many programming languages, use different tools for each platform and even use different operating systems to utilize those tools. This is a very inefficient and expensive to develop.

When a developer wants to extend an HTML5 hybrid app with native SDKs, it typically requires technical knowhow that most web developers don’t have. Besides having to install the SDKs in the native wrapper code base, the developer also needs to maintain these native libraries as they are updated over time. For many web developers, this is beyond their skill set.

Rake Narang: How do new technologies make it easier and faster to develop and maintain HTML5 hybrid apps?

Marko Lehtimaki: AppGyver Steroids makes it possible for web developers to add native SDKs to their apps without ever worrying about native code. AppGyver provides a platform that allows developers to add SDKs with just a few clicks, in addition to a few lines of JavaScript.

With Steroids, it’s also possible to target multiple app platforms with a single HTML5 code base. What’s best, developers can use their favourite text editors and terminal based tools, and none of the native development IDEs. Developers can see their application live on multiple devices and different platforms at the same time with AppGyver’s unique preview feature, which saves a lot of time.

Rake Narang: What new methodologies make HTML5 hybrid app development accessible to everyone? Is PhoneGap app development a thing of the past?

Marko Lehtimaki: AppGyver Steroids provides three major upgrades to PhoneGap platform: rapid development workflow, JavaScript APIs for easy data management, and native user interface features via JavaScript.

Rapid development workflow features consist of one-click sharing of apps for ad-hoc distribution, real-time preview of apps while they are being developed, and built-in debugging tools.

Data management features include ways to quickly connect HTML5 hybrid apps with any backend, synchronize data and manage it effectively within the app.

Native User Interface via JavaScript is a powerful tool since it makes it possible for developers to build their own HTML5-based apps to look and feel 100% native, for the first time ever. Developers can use native page transitions, animations and platforms consistent with native user interface elements. All this can be achieved with just a few lines of JavaScript code.
